Kindle Paperwhite Gets Jailbroken

The Kindle Paperwhite maybe be exclusively an e-reader, but that doesn’t mean it can’t suffer some sort of jailbreak or hack. The device just got through a jailbreak based on the hack for the Kindle Touch, now ported to this E Ink e-reader and available on the Paperwhite.

The features that you can unlock include using your device for weather information and serial terminal access with Raspberry Pi systems. The jailbreak for 5.1.2 firmware works for the Paperwhite 5.2.0 firmware. A word of caution here: the hacks that are installed on a jailbroken PaperWhite may cause bricking. The debricking requires a serial port use, until you discover how to get it into USB Downloader mode. It appears that the device was easily hacked from the look of things.

Installation is as easy as uploading a certain file to the root directory of the Kindle Paperwhite and then restarting the device. When it boots up again, it will be jailbroken. Once again be sure that you know what you are doing.

Be Prepared! Project Fiona Razer Gaming Tablet is Ready to Become Real! (Video)

If you were paying attention at CES 2012 earlier this year, I’m sure you noticed an interesting device, the Project Fiona Razer gaming tablet. This was one of the first gaming tablets that were showcased/announced this year, one that was promised to arrive with Windows 8 and Core i7 CPU. Now a Facebook post shows that the device will turn from project to reality.

Razer posted on its Facebook page that if it gets 10k likes/shares for that particular post in 7 days they will go through with the project. Guess what? They did and the device will now turn into reality. Razer is open to suggestions regarding design, specs, form factor and other features to include, as well as pricing. On the Razer site dedicated to this product we spotted a specs list that includes an Intel Core i7 processor and a 10.1 inch 1280 x 800 display, as well as a 3 axis gyroscope and an accelerometer.

A magnetometer, force feedback and Dolby 7.1 are offered as well, plus Bluetooth 3.0. In the days of CES 2012 Razer promised a sub $1000 price tag for this model and the latest Windows experience on board. The video below seems to indicate the presence of some controllers with physical buttons and analog pads, but I can’t tell if they’re part of the device or just attached…

ASUS Windows RT Tablet Vivo Tab RT Coming to AT&T As Well

AT&T is backing the Windows 8 tablet initiative big time, already taking under its wing the ASUS Vivo Tab RT with Win RT and the Samsung Ativ Smart PC. Both models are rumored to pop up in stores around the holiday season and I expect preorders to start either later this month or in early November.

Customers will get the devices from brick and mortar AT&T stores or online via the AT&T website. The 10.1 inch VivoTab with Windows RT was announced by ASUS back in August and its features include a quad core Tegra 3 processor, 32 GB of storage and 4G LTE connectivity. It ships with the ARM version of Windows 8 and a preview version of Office Home and Student 2013. The price for the model has yet to be revealed, but speculations say we should expect something around $400 – $500.

If you want more details about this ASUS device has 2 GB of RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and a 2 megapixel camera at the front. At the back there’s an 8 megapixel camera with a single LED flash and autofocus. Would you prefer this model over a Transformer Android tablet?

The iPad Mini Could theoretically Be Available for Free, I’m Pretty Sure It Won’t

There’s an interesting theory in a piece recently written on Slashgear, where the author speculates that the iPad Mini may be available for free. He uses the iPhone 3GS as an example, that was made available for free at some point when the iPhone 4S came and now the iPhone 4 is free, since the iPhone 5 is here. Now, the theory of the Slashgear editor is that the iPad Mini will be free from the start, to skip steps.

I’m obviously talking about availability on contract, since Apple is not ready to sell stuff at loss. I would imagine the iPad 2 going for free now, but not the iPad Mini. I can see a future where tablets may be free, but with some incredibly costly service attached, something like “paid Facebook” or some Apple social networking service. A free tablet would be desperate from Apple and they’re far from desperate now. Even if their product is pricier than the Nexus 7, it will still sell well, since the Apple army is always in motion.

On the other hand, the iPad Mini with a 2 year contract, available for free would make sense, but not right now. I think that there’s always room for one more $300 or $200 tablet, seeing how the new model will be available with some cool design and never before seen feature, that Apple will advertise to the moon and back. They do not need the freebies… they just don’t!

ASUS Padfone 2 Approved by Global Certification Forum, LTE on Board

ASUS PadFone 2 is gearing up for a press event on October 16th and it’s been accompanied by a bunch of leaks taking place over the past weeks. Well, now we get more details about the phone + tablet hybrid, that will come with a quad core Qualcomm Snadpragon CPU and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Turns out that the device has recently been approved by the Global Certification Forum.

On this occasion it was confirmed that the new PadFone has LTE connectivity, on bands 3, 7 and 20, usable only in Asia, Latin America and Europe. The PadFone with US-friendly LTE will probably pop up as well soon enough. Just like the first ASUS PadFone, this model will include a smartphone and its tablet serving as sort of a dock. No idea on how much it will cost and so far rumors have mentioned that the design is prettier, the devices are thinner and the PadFone gets more battery life.

One thing I’d like them to work on is getting rid of the big bulk at the back of the tablet, that made the thing look not so pretty. They can keep the design of the PadFone smartphone, that looked fantastic, but a battery tweak is welcome, since the handset wasn’t that good in that area. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what they come up with…

Nexus 7 Spotted Running Android 4.2, New Mystery Manta and Occam Devices With the Same OS Spotted

Although we can’t say we’re sure that the next Android will be version 4.2, it appears that this OS is being tested right now on the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Google Nexus 7 and some mystery devices. The proof of the devices running Android 4.2 is found on the server traffic logs of Android Police.

Aside from the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7, we spotted two newcomers, the Motorola Occam and Manta. If you go by the name Occam, you think about Occam’s Razor principle and then you think about Motorola Droid RAZR. Occam’z Razor means that if there are two theories that make the same prediction, the simpler one is the best. Since it was all about simplicity, Occam could be a Nexus  phone with stock Android 4.2 on board. The other leaked slate is the Manta, possibly a tablet with the latest Android version on board.

Why a tablet? Because the name “manta” is short for “manta-ray”, a naming concept that was used before on other Moto tablets. For example, Stingray was the WiFi version of the Motorola Xoom, while the Wingray was the version of the tablet for Verizon. Speculations say that this might actually be a Nexus 7 with a bigger 10 inch screen, one made by Motorola… Take all of this with a grain of salt, if you would.

Sony Stops Xperia Tablet Sales Because of Production Flaw: Gaps Between the Screen and Case

Remember when Sony advertised the Xperia Tablet S as being splashproof? Well, don’t go out with your tablet in the rain just yet, as the production has been halted on account of a defect. It appears that only a month after the product’s launch gaps between the screen and case were found and those make the slates exposed to water damage.

The tablet is supposed to be resistant to contact with water and breaking that promise is a disaster for Sony, who really advertised this feature. The problem was caused by a manufacturing problem in the Chinese plant where the device was manufactured. The information comes straight from top brass, Sony spokeswoman Noriko Shoji. Sony hasn’t decided when it will resume sales and how the already sold units will be handled. On September 7th the product started selling in USA, followed soon after by launches in Japan and Europe.

Around 100,000 devices have already been moved and the company is saying it will fix any of the already sold models that were damaged by water and doesn’t expect the recall to impact earnings. We’ve recently tested and reviewed the Sony Xperia Tablet S ourselves and we were inspired enough not to test its waterproof abilities, tempted as we were by that…

New iPad Pops Up in App Analytics With Apple A6-Based Chip

MacRumors got word from a developer who spotted some evidence regarding a device previously known as iPad 3.6, popping up in his app analytics. The device’s processor fits the new ARMv7s architecture, that supports the custom A6 system on a chip setup from the iPhone 5.

This new iPad seems to be running either the A6 chip itself or a variation of that, on Apple’s custom A6 design. It’s not yet very clear what the new iPad device represents, since the iPad from the current generation is iPad 3.1 and iPad 3.2, plus iPad 3.3, depending on various cellular and WiFi setups. 3.6 is too remote to mean anything, unless the rumors about an iPad 3 with tweaks are true. Apple has never been fond of releasing minor updates for its hardware products, but they may make the switch for the sake of the Lightning connector.

After all they did have that iPad with changed CPU type, switching to a 32 nm unit, so the change of port would be a minor tweak. The thing is that odds for this to be an iPad Mini are dismal, since the codename seems to fit the iPad 3 better. So, what’s happening here?

Microsoft Preparing Special Surface Tablet Event at Midnight October 26th

Microsoft is preparing for the big unveiling of Windows 8 and its associated tablets, taking place in a special event on October 26th, at midnight, as it was confirmed by MS itself. Microsoft already sent press invitations starting yesterday to the event, taking place in New York and kicking off at 10 am on October 25th and leading up to the midnight debut of the Surface on the 26th.

Other Microsoft Stores will start selling the device on October 26th and I guess that the products may be available as soon as midnight. Seeing how the PR machine over at Redmond works, I expect quite at crowd at the designed location, not an Apple launch type crowd, but still a decent queue of people. Also, it appears that Microsoft has another event ready, one that involves Windows Phone 8 and that one will go down on October 29th in San Francisco, so MS will have a busy end of October, by all indications.

We still have no prices for the Surface Tablet, last detailed by Steve Ballmer as priced at somewhere between $300 and $700 to $800, these being the sweet spot amounts of cash paid for the tablets. So, how much are you ready to shell for a Win RT Surface Tablet? How about the Win 8 Pro one?

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Preparing for US Debut! Here’s What You Need to Know!

On October 24th Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will take off in the United States and you need to know what to expect from this next generation of phablet. The device will debut in USA through a special media event in New York City, taking place on October 24th and the company will release then the final details about carrier availability, on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon.

The phablet comes with a 5.5 inch HD display, that offers support for S Pen action and incorporates a quad core processor with 4G LTE data speeds, a combo that in US is hard to find at the moment. Samsung has already posted a bunch of videos, teasers and detailed hands on videos, to give us an idea of what the phablet is about. We know it has a killer multitasking, a pen with the same amount of pressure levels as the Galaxy Note 10.1, Pop Up Play and the same camera as the Galaxy S III.

The Verizon Galaxy Note 2 will sell like hot cakes, I’m sure of that, since basically the product has no rival and there are people out there who skipped the iPhone 5 and waited for this product. If I can speculate about pricing, well expect something in the range of $299.99 with a 2 year contract and data plan. Rumors say that the unlocked version will set you back $800, so you can get that if you don’t want a commitment.

iPhone 5 Features – New Design, 4 Inches Display and 4G LTE Networking

It has been over 5 years since the launch of the first Apple iPhone in 2007. Now, the world is gearing up for the next generation iPhone, which is rumored to release on September 5th. The iPhone is known for its class and features which set it apart from the other mobile phones. The Samsung galaxy S3, HTC One X and many other high end phones are providing a stiff competition to Apple. The world is expecting more from apple this time to again regain the top most position.

It’s rumored as well as expected to have a new design, a bigger screen, a better camera, new processor and much more. With stiff competition from the likes of Samsung galaxy S3, HTC One X and other high end smartphones, reaching to a screen size of 4.8 inches. Apple is in great need to introduce a larger screen. In iPhone 5, it is expected to have increased to 4 inches from 3.5 inches screen diagonally. The hardware leaks of the next gen iPhone confirm such increase in size.
This will also result in the increase in number of pixels in the screen and the resolution of the next generation iPhone might increase to 640X1136p. Since the iPhone 5 is expected to have a 16:9 aspect ratio, reprogramming of the third generation apps will be required.

Apple has already introduced the new iPad with 4G technology, though it works only in some countries. The rumors of the iPhone 5 supporting 4G LTE Technology have already spread and with the news that Samsung is all set sue apple for 4G patents make it more possible, that the next generation iPhone might support 4G LTE after all.

Apple registered its patent for Nano SIM recently and news has come up since then that the next generation iPhone might also be using such smaller Nano SIM. And with providers like Verizon who have already started providing smaller SIM on customer request, chances of the next gen iPhone having nano SIM card slots have increased.

The inside package from apple includes the RAM, processor and the storage. According to rumors there are chances that the iPhone 5 might have an all new Apple A6 processor or the new iPad A5X processor. The iPhone 4S has a dual core A5 processor with 512 RAM, while the A5X is a quad core and if it’s A6 processor it’s expected to also be a Quad Core one both with a GB or more of RAM
The chances of increased RAM are also there. Apple is expected to increase the RAM form 512MB in iPhone 4S to 1GB or more in the iPhone 5.
Though the storage options might not differ as Apple launched the iPhone 4S in 64GB model already.

According to rumor mill, Apple has changed the displays it used to have. In order to decrease the thickness of the next gen iPhone Apple is using a new In-Cell display. So, you can expect the next iPhone to be much thinner than its predecessors. The new In-Cell Display has the touch sensor in the LCD screen only, thus it eliminates the need of a separate layer of for LCD and another for the touch sensor.
This will reduce the thickness of the next generation iPhone 5 to less 8mm as compared to the thickness of iPhone 4S that is 9.3mm.

There were rumors that the next generation iPhone might be available in different colors and in a 128GB variant also. But Apple being classy and conservative might not go up with this. Since iPhone 3G they have made their models available in only 2 colors, black and white. There were rumors that they might release an limited edition iPhone 5 with 128Gb storage and in a RED color option at a price of maybe $1000. I feel its the most unlikely rumor to be true.

There were many leaks previously showing a new 19 pin doc connector from Apple. This lead to both positive and negative reviews as the already available connector was available in many music boxes, speakers and all the docks were to be changed for the new iPhone or were to be left waste. We have heard that Apple might also release a conversion cable for the new iPhone. A smaller dock definitely look more stylish though.

Rumors are there that Apple might also release the next generation iPod or even an iPad mini with the all new design and better features. I feel that chances of a new iPod not on 12th September but maybe some other day are there rather than having an all new iPad mini. I feel an iPhone 5 with a screen more than 4 inches is equivalent to an iPad mini.

We will all know soon enough about what Apple has in store for us and which of these rumors true and which one them were false. Let’s wait and watch whether apple meets the expectations of the iPhone fans.
Out of all these features I personally feel that the next generation iPhone should have a bigger screen at least. The new design may or may not be there.
