Be Prepared! Project Fiona Razer Gaming Tablet is Ready to Become Real! (Video)

If you were paying attention at CES 2012 earlier this year, I’m sure you noticed an interesting device, the Project Fiona Razer gaming tablet. This was one of the first gaming tablets that were showcased/announced this year, one that was promised to arrive with Windows 8 and Core i7 CPU. Now a Facebook post shows that the device will turn from project to reality.

Razer posted on its Facebook page that if it gets 10k likes/shares for that particular post in 7 days they will go through with the project. Guess what? They did and the device will now turn into reality. Razer is open to suggestions regarding design, specs, form factor and other features to include, as well as pricing. On the Razer site dedicated to this product we spotted a specs list that includes an Intel Core i7 processor and a 10.1 inch 1280 x 800 display, as well as a 3 axis gyroscope and an accelerometer.

A magnetometer, force feedback and Dolby 7.1 are offered as well, plus Bluetooth 3.0. In the days of CES 2012 Razer promised a sub $1000 price tag for this model and the latest Windows experience on board. The video below seems to indicate the presence of some controllers with physical buttons and analog pads, but I can’t tell if they’re part of the device or just attached…

ASUS Windows RT Tablet Vivo Tab RT Coming to AT&T As Well

AT&T is backing the Windows 8 tablet initiative big time, already taking under its wing the ASUS Vivo Tab RT with Win RT and the Samsung Ativ Smart PC. Both models are rumored to pop up in stores around the holiday season and I expect preorders to start either later this month or in early November.

Customers will get the devices from brick and mortar AT&T stores or online via the AT&T website. The 10.1 inch VivoTab with Windows RT was announced by ASUS back in August and its features include a quad core Tegra 3 processor, 32 GB of storage and 4G LTE connectivity. It ships with the ARM version of Windows 8 and a preview version of Office Home and Student 2013. The price for the model has yet to be revealed, but speculations say we should expect something around $400 – $500.

If you want more details about this ASUS device has 2 GB of RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and a 2 megapixel camera at the front. At the back there’s an 8 megapixel camera with a single LED flash and autofocus. Would you prefer this model over a Transformer Android tablet?

Sony Stops Xperia Tablet Sales Because of Production Flaw: Gaps Between the Screen and Case

Remember when Sony advertised the Xperia Tablet S as being splashproof? Well, don’t go out with your tablet in the rain just yet, as the production has been halted on account of a defect. It appears that only a month after the product’s launch gaps between the screen and case were found and those make the slates exposed to water damage.

The tablet is supposed to be resistant to contact with water and breaking that promise is a disaster for Sony, who really advertised this feature. The problem was caused by a manufacturing problem in the Chinese plant where the device was manufactured. The information comes straight from top brass, Sony spokeswoman Noriko Shoji. Sony hasn’t decided when it will resume sales and how the already sold units will be handled. On September 7th the product started selling in USA, followed soon after by launches in Japan and Europe.

Around 100,000 devices have already been moved and the company is saying it will fix any of the already sold models that were damaged by water and doesn’t expect the recall to impact earnings. We’ve recently tested and reviewed the Sony Xperia Tablet S ourselves and we were inspired enough not to test its waterproof abilities, tempted as we were by that…

Microsoft Preparing Special Surface Tablet Event at Midnight October 26th

Microsoft is preparing for the big unveiling of Windows 8 and its associated tablets, taking place in a special event on October 26th, at midnight, as it was confirmed by MS itself. Microsoft already sent press invitations starting yesterday to the event, taking place in New York and kicking off at 10 am on October 25th and leading up to the midnight debut of the Surface on the 26th.

Other Microsoft Stores will start selling the device on October 26th and I guess that the products may be available as soon as midnight. Seeing how the PR machine over at Redmond works, I expect quite at crowd at the designed location, not an Apple launch type crowd, but still a decent queue of people. Also, it appears that Microsoft has another event ready, one that involves Windows Phone 8 and that one will go down on October 29th in San Francisco, so MS will have a busy end of October, by all indications.

We still have no prices for the Surface Tablet, last detailed by Steve Ballmer as priced at somewhere between $300 and $700 to $800, these being the sweet spot amounts of cash paid for the tablets. So, how much are you ready to shell for a Win RT Surface Tablet? How about the Win 8 Pro one?

HP Envy x2 Convertible Windows 8 Tablet Has Optional Keyboard Dock, Premium Feeling (Video)

The convertible tablet format has been trendy lately, especially for Windows 8 devices. We’ve seen ASUS adopting it, Samsung too and even Lenovo and Acer tried it. Now HP does the same thing, but they have a more premium approach through the HP Envy x2 convertible slate model. Envy x2 comes with an optional keyboard dock, that turns the tablet into a laptop or ultrabook.

We get a device with a thin design, aluminum build quality (both the keyboard dock and rear of the slate), plus Beats Audio technology for improved sound experience. The device is based on the Intel x86 Clover Trail chipset, so it gives you the full Windows 8 experience and not Windows RT, the one that’s limited for ARM chipsets. HP Envy x2 packs a bright 11.6 inch HD touchscreen with IPS technology and 400 nits of brightness. It also has NFC support and has an optional digitizing pen. At the back we find an 8 megapixel camera and at the front there’s a HD quality webcam.

Separating this product from its rivals is an unique hinge, activated by magnets. Instead of requiring that extra push to fit into the locking on mechanism, we get this option of docking system with magnets. Each piece, the tablet and dock weighs 1.5 pounds and the total weight matches the one of an ultrabook. The pricing is yet unknown, but what we do know is that the product is coming towards the end of the year.

IFA 2012: Dell XPS 10 Windows RT Tablet Offers 20 Hours of Battery Life, Showcased Today

Dell joined the bigshots unveiling new tablets with Windows 8 and Windows RT at IFA 2012. I’m talking about the Dell XPS 10, that’s a 10 inch Win RT slate, once again with a format involving a removable keyboard dock.
Dell XPS 10 is supposed to have a very impressive battery , that lasts 20 hours with a single charge.

Of course, the 20 hours mean without full Windows apps, since Windows RT only runs a smaller version of the applications, especially created for the ARM platform. Dell partnered with Qualcomm for this initiative, the famous brand that gave us the Qualcomm chipsets of the last year. At the front we have a HD touchscreen and other features include a microUSB port and microSD card slot, as well as a 10 mm thick chassis. Bluetooth and WiFi are included among the specs and Dell may also integrate 3G/4G in the future.

Pricing is still a mystery, as is the rest of the specs of the Dell XPS 10, but I suppose a Snapdragon S4 or S4 Pro is a pretty good guess for the device, plus 1 or 2 GB of RAM. 16GB of storage and USB ports should also be here.

IFA 2012: Haier Joins the Ranks of Android Tablet Makers

The bigshots that were expected to unveil tablets at IFA 2012 did exactly that, with Samsung and Sony showcasing new slates. A name we don’t usually associate with tablets is Haier, that unveiled some new tablets at IFA 2012. Chinese based company Haier is now one of the tablet makers and we knew this name from the household appliances business, devices that this company makes.

One of Haier’s fresh products includes an iPad Killer, a tablet called Maxi Pad 1012. It adopts the 9.7 inch diagonal and 1024 x 768 pixel resolution of older iPads (1st and second generation) and runs Android 4.0 ICS out of the box. The tablet relies on an ARM Cortex A8 processor and comes with WiFi b/g/n connectivity, 8 GB of storage, a microSD card slot, a mini USB port and mini HDMI connector. No information about the CPU, RAM or battery on this device, but it sounds pretty decent so far.

The company also unveiled a phone, called the Phone Pad 551, that’s actually a phablet with a 5.4 inch 940 x 540 pixel resolution. The device runs a mystery version of Android, maybe Jelly Bean, has an 8 MP camera and 4 GB of storage on board, as well as WiFi, 3G and GPS. No info about pricing sadly.

Lexibook Kid Tablet Coming to USA: 7 Inch Slate With $237 Price Tag

If you’re looking for a tablet for your kid, you may just want to give the Lexibook slate a try. This device is coming to USA from next month and the price is supposed to be pretty close to the Lexibook First version available in Europe. I’m talking about $237 here, a tad pricey if you’ve heard about the Nexus 7 before.

The device offers a 600 MHz processor, 256 MB RAM, 4 GB of storage, a microSD card slot and parental control. To that we add WiFi 802.11 b/g and Android 2.2 Froyo, so don’t expect much on the OS side. There will be a preview launch at Toys R Us stores all over the nation and the official debut will take place on September 15th. The educational content on board involves 500 sheet of general education info, tests and quizzes.
There are School Zone apps and 200 preloaded ebooks to have fun with and learn from. Stories, rhymes, Susie Tallman’s top songs and karaoke videos, everything a child needs to develop and learn is available here. 25 games and 52 discovery activities are bundled, as well as a camera with photo editing software. There’s also a specific app store for this slate: LexiBook Market, including apps like Pig Rush, games like Angry Birds and more.

Samsung SGH-T779 Gets Bluetooth SIG Approval; New Tablet or Just a Rebranding?

Samsung has managed to leak something that’s not the Galaxy Note II today, a device codenamed SGH-T779, that could be a new tablet or simply a new version of an existing one. This slate is possibly headed to T-Mobile and it’s coming with Bluetooth 4.0, indication that we’re dealing with a higher end model, with the new standards on board.

The Product Name is “Samsung Mobile Tablet (SGH-I497)”, that should point towards a device also headed for AT&T. However, the SGH-i497already passed through the FCC and it’s believed to be the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. It could be that model in a new carrier version or maybe a newcomer, like that rumored Retina Display Samsung tablet or maybe the Galaxy Note 10.1 in a different version. IFA 2012 will clear up all the rumors and show us which new products Samsung is ready to unveil.
